A different kind of International Mother Language Day celebration

February 21 is International Mother language day. Set up by the UN to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism, it’s our kind of event!

To celebrate, we’d like to ask you, wherever in the world you may be, and whatever language you speak, to record and send us a video of you saying a particular phrase in your native tongue.

What could this phrase be? We’ve thought long and hard. We’ve discussed such phrases as, “I love [this] language”, or “Happy Mother language day”. But they fall a bit flat. They simply don’t do justice to the scale of the celebration: the glory and diversity of human language.

We wanted a phrase that represents both the joys and laughter… and yet also the frustrations of trying to learn another language. Its a tough thing to summarise in one short sentence. We pondered about it extensively. We discussed countless options. Finally, we alighted on the perfect phrase…

“My hovercraft is full of eels”

We dream of creating the worlds’ largest collection of videos of people saying translations of “My hovercraft is full of eels”.

Let’s make it happen! Send your videos to oliviaz@memrise.com.
