We are *so* excited about the Polyglot Conference in Fukuoka, Japan, which we’ll be sponsoring the for the 3rd consecutive year. Polyglots speak multiple languages and love learning them as well. And it’s not only because we’re the-fastest-way-to-learn-a-language app, but the people here at Memrise love languages and we’re proud to be a part this passionate community. Here are some stories from our very own language lovers:
Alexis and Céline
These two have quite a story. Alexis and Céline met each other here working at Memrise (they can speak 13 languages between them, so it’s no surprise that they work here 😅) Alexis is on our development team and Céline is one of our engineering managers. They immediately connected by their mutual interest in languages and bonded by speaking different languages together. They’ve just returned from spending a whole month in Japan, where they got married 💕
Languages: French, English, German, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Spanish, Swedish, Russian, Arabic, Dutch, Italian, and Polish.
When you decline a job at The Pokemon Company to work at Memrise, you *know* you must love languages. Hailing from Osaka, Japan, Kana is our Japanese Language Specialist. Aside from creating a Japanese course that is fun and helps you learn fast, she’s also responsible for getting everyone at Memrise addicted to this card game she brought back from Japan. It’s called はぁって言うゲーム, and looks like all the cool kids are playing it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNC014ClCzU
Kana also created a super-secret-exclusive Hakata Japanese course just for the Polyglot Conference 🤫Hakata is the dialect spoken in Fukuoka, which has subtle differences from standard Japanese. If you’re logged in to the Memrise app, just click here. Or if you’re new to Japanese, here’s another version where you don’t need to know how to read Japanese.
Languages: English, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, and a bit of Russian.
Mbongeni, or MB to his friends, is our Product Manager with a “modest” goal of learning seven languages in his lifetime. He’s got four so far – to help him decide on his fifth, MB crowdsourced it on his social media and now he’s learning Chinese. His favourite word is in “lilale”, which means “goodnight” in Ndebele. The word is soothing, melodic and lovely… that’s definitely the best way to wish someone a good night 🌜
Languages: Zulu, Shona, Ndebele, English, Chinese.
According to his mum, Rob’s been annoyingly interested in languages even as a baby. Rob has lived in China and Spain to learn Chinese and Spanish and Catalan (that’s dedication). He’ll tell you that he can communicate in 10 languages (including British Sign Language), but he also knows a degree of Zulu, Chongqing dialect, Lombard, and Korean. Rob is our English Language Specialist and is responsible for making our courses fun, useful and teach you the things that real locals actually say.
